Visiting a new state is an adventure and New York is one place that has a little bit to offer every kind of traveler. You just need to know where to go.  Planning your trip to New York is a fun-filled adventure that requires a car and an E-zPass to travel their Thruways. It’s amazing what you can see in one day and it is not all in the city either. Some of the best places to visit in New York are:

No trip to New York is complete without a stop in the Big Apple. It is one of the best places to visit in New York. It has so many things to see, it is hard to limit yourself. Plan to spend several days visiting the city if you do want to explore.  You can take a tour of Ellis Island and visit the Statue of Liberty as well as a number of Broadway plays. The Empire State Building is worth a stop and the site of ground zero where the twin towers fell in 2001. There is currently a memorial for all the people who lost their lives there. Times Square is the place to live it up at night and don’t miss out on the amazing food!

Lake Placid

Much of the State of New York is made up of beautiful scenery. One of the best places to visit in New York is Lake Placid. This is a village located in the Adirondack Mountains. It is a place of endless outdoor activities. You can hike, canoe, take a boating tour on the lake and visit the commemorative areas for the 1980 Winter Olympics. There are places to shop for that perfect gift or souvenir as well as places to rent inner tubes or raft for a bit of fun on the water. This is a place to come to relax and have fun.

There are slower water activities that the entire family can enjoy too such as their sightseeing cruises or the Six Flags theme park.  If that is not enough, there are spas to relax in and plenty of performing arts shows and live concerts to attend when the weather is not nearly so nice.

If you want to take a look at Canada from the U.S. Side of the border, a visit to the Thousand Islands is the place to go. It is one of the best places to visit in New York. It is also has a beautiful bay to enjoy and miles of shoreline to wander and lose yourself on. Much of the area is privately owned, but the area has a lot to do and see. There are historic lighthouses to view just off the coast, amazing castles and local museums. This is a terrific area to camp and enjoys the great outdoors with boating and fishing spots everywhere. There are also tours available to visit the many islands that make up this paradise.


Buffalo – New York

Buffalo, New York is right on Lake Erie. It is a perfect place to visit if you want to enjoy the great doors. Being right on the lake means that fishing and hiking around the area are a must. If you choose to stay in the city, you can visit the Albright-Knox Gallery or the Erie County Naval and Military Park. The city’s botanical gardens are one of the main attractions for the area and if you have children, the Buffalo Museum of Science should be on your “to-do” list. This city offers a wide variety of activities for any type of visitor.

The Finger Lakes

There are 11 lakes closely grouped together in Central New York. It is one of the best places to visit in New York. They are the Finger Lakes. While each lake is worth a visit, you should enjoy the drive to each as well. You will be traveling down back country roads that wind their way around old New York. Much of this part of the country is farmland though between all the lakes are about 100 wineries and vineyards that any wine lover has to visit. You can visit the Glenn H. Curtis Aviation museum or take in the beautiful scenery by taking boat rides on any of these lovely lakes.


Albany – New York

Albany is the capital of New York. One of the main reasons to visit Albany is to see many of the grand old mansions from the city’s historic past such as the State Executive Mansion or the Ten Brock Mansion and the Schuyler Mansion. It is one of the best places to visit in New York. If you enjoy cultural activities, the Institute of Art and History and the Palace Theater are worth your visit. You can also visit the WWII-era ship, the USS Slater that calls Albany home. Guided tours are available for those of you that enjoy military history. The area is also rich in outdoor activities such as hiking trails and fishing holes.


Ithaca – New York

Ithaca is a lovely college town which is home to two colleges, Cornell and Ithaca College. It is a small town that is a perfect place to stay while visiting the Finger Lakes. There are many museums and live shows to visit, many on the college campuses themselves. You can take an easy hike to Buttermilk Falls which is just down the road or visit any of the quaint shops located in the downtown area known as the commons. There are many places to explore around the area for hiking and swimming. You can also visit the Namgyal Monastery which is the North American Seat for the Dalai Lama.


Rochester – New York

Rochester is home to a thriving culture. It is a city of art, food, and history. You can visit the historic homes of several notable people including the home of Susan B. Anthony. It is a very green city which has several waterfalls, an arboretum, and multiple hiking trails. Seneca Park Zoo is worth a visit for the entire family as well as The Memorial Art Gallery which showcases the medieval times in several different art exhibits. If that is not enough for you, the Seabreeze Amusement Park is conveniently located nearby so you can get some thrills along on your trip.


Montauk – New York

Montauk is a long island town full of laidback and relaxed people. It is the perfect place a visitor can come and find the peace they need. Seal watching is a very popular thing to do and they can be found along the Montauk Point State Park. The Hither Hills State Park is the perfect place to go swimming and camping if you need a bit of time outdoors. You can also visit the Second House which is a historic cottage that was a home for shepherds in the early 1900s. Along with the cottage is the 1797 lighthouse.
